Patterned Installation

Written by Claire: Charting the progress of my recent commission in Didsbury, Manchester: from sample colours to drafted patterns and then after a few months of developing two bespoke elements for a new residential project by McNulty Architects I finally travelled up to carry out the installation.  The acid green glass panel etched with my large-scale leaf pattern was inserted between the modern white kitchen units and a complementary 4 metre tall printed canvas hung in the double height wall recess. The largest canvas I have ever stretched! Great friends and local trades contributed their time and skills to ensure the end result was perfect. See more pictures here...

Written by Claire: With Spring in the air I'm sensing the beginnings of new work created in the spirit of my journey to Japan.  I was inspired by so much: colour + texture, the juxtaposition of the traditional + the super modern, the attention to detail and aesthetics.  Drawing together these references I begin to see patterns literally and conceptually, building ideas for new prints.  There are so many starting points to explore, here's just a few with a little snippet of a new idea...

Claire's Travels: On a bright Saturday morning a wedding procession moved silently across a courtyard of the Meiji-jingu shrine and I felt transported to the past.  The red paper parasol hovering over the bride was mesmerising in contrast to the green tinged copper roof.  Shinto and Buddhist prayers are written and hung within the grounds of temples and shrines.  Koi carp swim above the underwater coins.

Neon Tokyo

Written by Claire: Back to Brighton and reviewing the imagery collected from such a fantastic trip to Tokyo city.  We stayed in the heart of Ginza amidst the skyscrapers:  an explosion of neon lights at ground level and stretching into the sky.  Night time views across Tokyo Bay and downwards to the network of streets sprawling below.  Illuminated signs and light boxes ranged from designer branding to artist constructions.
